Design Fundamentals Flower Project

This was a basic design project. We were to take a part of an image that showed what it was but not the whole image, and then reproduce it using several techniques. This was not my choice of pictures, but my teacher choose it for me. It eventually grew on me and I love the way it turned out. I do not have a picture of the final mounted project, but when I get it back I will post it, along with the final technnique which is not shown here.

Mask/Hat Posters

Next after the Mask (see previous post), we were told to make a 11x17 poster promoting our mask, along with specific information she asked to appear.

Masks, Hats and Feathers, Oh My...

There was a project that my teacher came up with, for the whole school, to make hats and masks in honor of Halloween. Since I have her for two classes, and she made this a project for our classes, I made several. I started with two and didn't like them and just kept making them until I was finally happy with them. I have also included the "artist's statements" that our teach made us put together for each mask. Check them out and let me know what you think.

This is my favorite and what I consider my alter ego of "sugar plum". The hair is fierce.
Sugar Plum

Sugar Plum is my alter ego. She is how I see my inner self with bright colors, textures, glitter and a little flair for the exotic. Her pink feather hair gives the mask a soften touch in contrast with the stark white face. The shapes of the cheeks, lips and eyes, along with the tribal art, give her a personality that makes her come alive. This mask was actual the most simple of my masks, but I believe has the most impact based purely on color and texture.

This mask was based on my 30 head drawing. If you take off the veil it looks just like a black and white (pearlized) mask , but when you add the veil it becomes two women.

The Kiss

This design is based on an illustration I drew for my rapid visualization class to support love. The illustration was a black ink tribal sketching of men kissing men, women kissing women as well as men kissing women. Once I came up with the shape of the mask, I wanted to make the mask itself very stark in contrast with the lines of only part of the sketch. It takes on the appearance of just a line drawing, but once you know what it is, you see the two faces kissing, without knowing their gender. Once the veil is laid over the mask, it becomes two women kissing in a very faint and subtle overlay.

Here is my teacher's favorite. She actually named it for me and we are calling it the "happy place". It is where she would go if she could go to her "happy place". There is a reserved bench just to make sure no one jacks it.

Go to My Happy Place

Who doesn’t prefer to spend time in their happy place as opposed to reality? This is a conceptual design based on what my happy place looks like. It all started with the paper flowers (individually made by hand) that seemed to take over the design with their colors and glitter that make them glow. I knew the additional colors could not compete; hence the gray and assorted muted tones. I used a basic green felt to simulate a “tacky” green grass/turf and made a reserved bench to balance the design with a focal point and hidden treasure among the flowers.

Here is my final one based on the color wheel. It has all of the 12 shades from the color wheel and it is a feather based tiara.

Queen of Color

The Queen of Color Crown is in honor of the color fundamental teachers. We all remember having to paint and repaint tints, tones and shades of the color wheel, so I decided to honor that with a little sparkle. The crown is my favorite accessory and the ring of feathers adds a soft texture to the base. The color circles are made in a 3D format to show how colors can reflect at different angles and are unique to the individual viewer.

Tiaras, Crowns and Masks oh my

All other projects were put on hold... The teacher I have for two of my classes, decided last week to throw a contest for Halloween at the school. We must make masks /hats/tiaras/ whatever in certain categories and since we are in her classes, she had us do this as a class project. Since I am in two of her classes, I was told to make two, but got inspired and ended up making FOUR. Yes...nuts I know.

Here they are. The contest is later today (Thursday) and we will see how they do. Hopefully they will score me an A+ in class.

This first one is my favorite and kind of off the cuff. I see it as kind of my inner persona.

My teacher came up with the title for this one as "Go to my happy place". It was all based on these paper flowers that an artist named Jeff Rudell makes at http://www.craftstylish.com/item/7515/how-to-make-simple-white-paper-flowers . I have been wanting to try them forever and somehow it turned into this cute hat with a bench and flowers. It is whatever you want it to be.

This mask is based on my last project that I have not posted the final version on here. It was a equal love (girls with girls, boys with boys and boy and girl kissing poster). If you see it it makes more sense, but basically on the actual pearled mask is part of the faces and on the veil you can very faintly see the rest of the drawing. Not sure about this one yet...

Here is my ode to my color fundamentals class or as I call it the Queen of Color. It is a tiara/crown with the color wheel in little sparkly spinning wheels of color.

Ongoing projects for school

In one of my illustration classes, we were told to come up with a 30 head drawing...not many stipulations other than 30 heads....needless to say this was extremely difficult coming up with a design. I finally settled on a version of the support love banners for gay marriage and the heads are based on some old Andy Warhol fashion sketches.

Here was my first version that took me a week to come up with b/c I was so darn stuck. My brain literally went blank. I was not happy with this one b/c the spacing was off and the men's heads looked a little like aliens. I cut this one up and made it into the next picture.

Here is the current process of the 30 heads....it may take forever and I am not sure how I am going to pull it all together but ..here we are at a cross roads.

This is for the other illustration class. We had to take part of an object and draw a 3x3 inch section of the item. My teacher picked mine b/c I could not find anything I loved. She picked this flower and I drew the 3x3 inch square...didn't like it, so I broke the frame in two places ( drew outside the box). The section version is in process and it must be the same item but you must use stippling (small dots) to draw the item. As you can see...it will take awhile too.

Last...this is what started the 30 head drawing...I was going to make all the shoes have faces and have them lined up on the shelves in the mirror. You may see this again b/c I think I am going to use it for the base of the next project....check back for updates.
